Aliki Karanikas

Hi Everyone, My name is Aliki and thank you for taking the time to read my platform statement in running for Aesculapian Society (ASoc) President! ASoc has been a cornerstone of my medical school experience, shaping my time at uOttawa thus far. By serving as the VP Social Assistant in first year and the VP Social this year, I have had the privilege of connecting with my peers, listening to their needs, and contributing to the vibrant community we share. These roles have deepened my understanding of the value ASoc brings to our students’ lives, whether by creating meaningful experiences outside the classroom or by providing crucial support in navigating the demands of medical education. Taking on the role of ASoc President represents an opportunity to continue contributing to our community and serving as a voice for all medical classes. I am committed to being a representative who listens openly, advocates effectively, and ensures that each class feels their perspectives are valued and heard. As a liaison between medical students and the Faculty, I aim to facilitate transparent communication, address student concerns, and maintain a collaborative relationship with our educators and administration. Being the ASoc President also means supporting and empowering our Council’s executive members. My experience as VP Social has shown me the effort required to plan events that cater to a diverse student body and promote a sense of belonging. I understand the challenges of balancing responsibilities, the need for adaptability, and the importance of fostering a supportive team dynamic. I am eager to learn more about the portfolios of the other executives and provide guidance and assistance in whatever capacity I can, whether that means brainstorming ideas, offering logistical support, or helping navigate unforeseen challenges. As President, I would work to maintain the supportive and inclusive environment that ASoc strives to cultivate while exploring new ways to engage our students and strengthen our community. I envision collaborating with the executive team to expand opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, and enhance student wellness initiatives. I would love to hear more about your ideas to promote student wellbeing and also see how we can better integrate simple initiatives into our everyday, such as regularly scheduled yoga classes or morale boosters during exam periods, that can make a big difference. Ultimately, my experiences within ASoc have shaped my desire to continue contributing to this community in a meaningful way. I believe my dedication to our student body, my commitment to effective communication, and my understanding of the demands faced by our peers will allow me to serve in this role. I am excited about the possibility of working alongside a wonderful executive team, representing our students, and building on the strong foundation that has already been established. Thank you for your consideration! Sincerely, Aliki
