President

Anne-Marie Séguin

Bonjour, hi! My name is Anne-Marie Séguin, and I would like to run for president of the ASoc ! Since beginning my medical studies, I have been actively involved in several student and faculty organizations, which has allowed me to develop a strong understanding of the issues affecting our education and student community, as well as interpersonal skills essential to the role of president, including communication, collaboration, and decision-making in a group setting. I am currently class president for the Francophone stream of the MD2028 cohort, a role I have held since my first year. This involvement has allowed me to work closely with students, cohort representatives, ASoc members, and the administration to relay student concerns and advance important issues. The monthly ASoc meetings have also helped me better understand the realities of both the Francophone and Anglophone streams, giving me a broader perspective on the issues affecting all medical students. More recently, I was appointed to the nominating committee for the future dean of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine, where I participate in discussions with stakeholders from within the faculty, the university and the different communities of Ottawa and gain insight into the strategic issues shaping our training. I want to strengthen student representation in decision-making bodies of the faculty and partner organizations. My goal is to bring a clear student voice to committees where the president sits, such as the Faculty Council, the Faculty of Medicine Advisory Council, the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS), and the Ottawa Hospital Residents’ Council, so that student realities and needs are truly considered. Having grown within the Francophone stream while collaborating closely with Anglophone students, I also want to highlight the strength of bilingualism within our faculty. I also want to maintain transparent and accessible communication with students. It is important that students can share their concerns and ideas so they can help guide the discussions and decisions that affect them. I therefore hope to promote open communication channels between students and the ASoc Council, including adding a comment form on the ASoc website so everyone can feel heard and represented. In short, I want to continue building a student society where every student feels heard, supported, and represented. By strengthening student advocacy, promoting collaboration between the Francophone and Anglophone streams, and maintaining open communication with our community, I hope to contribute to a stronger and more connected ASoc. Merci beaucoup pour votre confiance et votre soutien. I would be honoured to represent you as president of the ASoc.
