VP Information Technology
Alaina Dhawan
Hello everyone! My name is Alaina Dhawan (MD2028), and I am thrilled to be running for VP of IT. As the current VP of IT Assistant, I have gained first hand experience in managing ASoc’s digital platforms, collaborating with students and faculty, and supporting initiatives that improve our student experience. Now, I’m eager to push our IT portfolio forward with innovation, accessibility, and engagement at the forefront. To guide my vision, I introduce P.A.G.E. (Promote, Advance, Guide, Engage), a framework that will enhance ASoc’s digital presence and improve the medical student experience through technology! P - Promote Student Voices Medical school is filled with incredible student-led initiatives, research, and advocacy efforts that deserve greater visibility. I hope to: a) Introduce an "Advocacy & Wellness Blog" where students can share experiences related to wellness, equity, and medical student life. b) Enhance ASoc’s social media presence by developing engaging content such as "Med Moments" Series: short, interactive posts featuring student perspectives on rotations, study tips, and professional growth. "Physician Q&A": a digital space where students can submit questions to be answered by faculty members in various specialties. A - Advance Digital Accessibility & Innovation Technology should streamline, not complicate our medical school experience. To ensure a student-friendly, intuitive digital environment, I aim to: a) Improve ASoc’s website navigation and searchability so students can quickly find relevant resources. b) Introduce a Resource Recommendation System where students can suggest and upvote useful academic tools, wellness supports, and clerkship prep materials. G - Guide Students with Tech-Driven Resources To simplify student life, I hope to: a) Enhance the "Wellness" section (coming soon!) by collaborating with The Student Affairs Office to integrate mental health check-in tools and a peer-support message board for students. b) Create an interactive “Skills Bank” for clinical skills – A peer-sourced collection of clinical skills videos, mnemonics, and guides for common OSCE and ward procedures (i.e., suturing techniques, interpreting ECGs). E - Engage the Medical Student Community Through Media & Collaboration Building a strong sense of community is key to a fulfilling medical school experience. To strengthen student connections, myself, and Fadi Esttaifo (MD2027, VP of IT) are launching the ASoc Media Committee, which will: a) Produce engaging content that showcases student life, including Elective Reflections (student-generated videos sharing insights from rotations across different specialties) as well as Community Week Recaps (capturing memorable moments from students’ diverse experiences). Why Vote for Me? a) Proven Experience: As ASoc’s current VP of IT Assistant, I have firsthand knowledge of ASoc’s digital infrastructure and how to improve it. b) Passion for Technology & Student Success: My background in computer science (JavaScript) and student leadership makes me uniquely suited to enhance ASoc’s digital presence. c) Commitment to Innovation & Inclusivity: I am dedicated to making ASoc’s platforms more accessible, engaging, and student-driven. With P.A.G.E., I am ready to modernize, strengthen, and transform the digital experience for uOttawa ASoc.
