Celestina Onabajo
Hey everyone, my name is Celey and I’m re-running for the MD Class of 2029 co-presidency for the Anglophone stream! This past year was a much bigger adjustment than I imagined. Slowly but surely, things got serious. Balancing academics, extracurriculars, social connections, and simply trying to stay grounded through it all. Through those experiences, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about our class, listen to your concerns, celebrate our successes, and better understand what support actually looks like in medical school. After reflecting on what I’ve accomplished this year and where I can continue to grow, I’m excited to introduce some new (and improved) initiatives for the upcoming year! Streamlining communication! We receive an overwhelming amount of communication–emails, newsletters, deadlines, opportunities, and updates from all directions. I know how hard it can be to keep up with everything. My goal is to cut down the noise in your inbox by consolidating key updates, opportunities, and reminders into one organized (free) Substack newsletter. Pre-block meetings! We entered this program during a period of transition, and conflicting information often made it difficult to know what was accurate, especially during exam season. My plan is to meet with the Dean of Assessments, unit leads, and content experts before new blocks begin to ensure expectations and assessment information are clearly communicated to our class. Merch! This past year, delays with suppliers and logo approvals made it difficult to provide release dates or gather meaningful student feedback on options and designs. By taking over merchandise planning for next year, I want to create a detailed merch timeline with previews and opportunities for input so you know what to expect and actually love what you’re buying. Save your money this summer because I have a lot planned! Research and professional support! Many of us have started thinking about residency and how to build a competitive CV, but finding research and professional development opportunities can feel overwhelming. I’ve developed partnerships with the Career Corner, Research Office, and MEDSAO to organize workshops focused on CV development, research involvement, and funding opportunities offered within the institution and even externally. Well-being, advocacy, and representation! Our program works hard to provide us with the best medical education possible, but sometimes things don’t align with the needs of our class. We deserve efficient ways to share feedback and advocate for change. I will continue to make myself available through surveys, feedback forms, and private messaging to ensure your voices are heard. While I can’t change everything , I can do everything in my power to ensure that your voices are heard. Although I’ll be entering this year with a new mindset, my ultimate goal remains the same: to help build a class culture that feels supportive, connected, and empowering. I want to continue being someone who advocates for your needs, encourages collaboration, and helps create experiences that make this journey feel a little lighter and a lot more meaningful. Medical school can be overwhelming, but I truly believe that the people around us make all the difference. I’d be honoured to continue representing our class and working alongside all of you for another year! Stay tuned for more details about my campaign on my Facebook event page throughout this upcoming week!
